Maintaining confidential digital dialogue during humanitarian emergencies

Communication is of great importance in humanitarian settings and especially confidentiality is pivotal in this. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, more and more communication is digital. These digital communication forms became more common in humanitarian work. However, they also formed new challenges for the sector such as the possible digital surveillance and interception that poses a threat to confidentiality and integrity that is so important for humanitarian work.

This short paper by the ICRC, IFRC, IOM and the OCHA, provides and overview of the threats to confidentiality associated with digital communications, recommendations on how to mitigate those treats and a set of resources that can help with that.
